About CFHC

Cape Fear Healthy Carolinians is a local coalition of organizations and businesses throughout our area that have come together to address the national goals of Healthy People 2010. Our local organization is supported by Healthy Carolinians staff at the state level in the North Carolina Division for Public Health, established in 1999 by Governor Jim Hunt along with a task force that was appointed by Executive Order.

The six State Healthy Carolinian goals are the following:

  1. Increase the span of healthy life of North Carolinians.
  2. Remove health disparities among the disadvantaged.
  3. Promote access to preventive care.
  4. Protect the public’s health.
  5. Foster positive living and working.

There were twelve priority areas established at the state level with objectives under each area. Objectives are to be used to accomplish the following:

  1. Create partnerships to facilitate community health improvement.
  2. Seek funding and establish funding priorities.
  3. Influence the establishment of health policies.
  4. Facilitate community planning processes.
  5. Guide community health assessments.
  6. Conduct health education.

Partners of Cape Fear Healthy Carolinians reviewed a variety of community health assessments that helped guide the selection of three health priorities. In the end, partners voted to form subcommittees on: Access to Health Care, Obesity Prevention, and Violence Prevention. Sub-committees meet monthly and the larger taskforce meets quarterly to discuss progress. A steering committee provides general direction and oversight for the larger taskforce.
